Insight Piano with Lukas Sternath

Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 18:00
Steinway & Sons, Manufaktur
Lukas Sternath (Piano), Simon Rempe (Talk), Anne Kussmaul (Moderator)
Be it a piano recital, lieder recital, piano trio or piano concerto – as soon as a concert grand is involved, one thing is essential: tuning the piano’s strings. When the instruments have been tuned correctly, you only perceive this consciously in the rarest cases. But even the minutest imperfection can turn the long-awaited musical experience into an acoustic nightmare. That this is not the case in the professional music business is thanks to outstanding piano tuners who fine tune the 88 keys of a concert grand before each concert. At »Insight Piano«, Simon Rempe, master piano builder at Steinway & Sons, and the pianist Lukas Sternath, reveal the things you have to pay special attention to when tuning, and explain why different pianists have different preferences. The event starts at 18:00 with a tour of the Steinway & Sons production halls. Then, following a short break with cool drinks, Simon Rempe and Lukas Sternath share fascinating insights into the collaboration between piano builders and pianists.

Golden Ear Challenge

Fri, Mar 7, 2025, 19:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kaistudio 1 (Hamburg)
Orchester im Treppenhaus, Iris Mencke (Talk), Kai Siedenburg (Talk), Anne Kussmaul (Moderator)
This special evening combines an enjoyable concert, a listening challenge and music psychology research: as part of a research programme by the University of Oldenburg, the Orchester im Treppenhaus, which is known for unusual concert formats, plays a surprise programme. Via smartphone, the audience can subsequently rate their listening experience and, at the end, compete in the »Golden Ear Awards« competition. With anyone, not only are our personal musical tastes quite different, but also our listening skills. So, music psychology research also concerns itself with and explores causes of these differences – to improve concert experiences for people with hearing impairments as well. After the concert, smartphone rating and challenge, the musicians involved and academics from the University of Oldenburg illustrate the results of their experiment. Please note: this event takes place in German. If you enjoy listening attentively, you are also in the right place for the concert with the Goldmund Quartet on 19 March in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall: two string quartet classics by Joseph Haydn and Robert Schumann encounter insider tips from the Romantic period and the present. Award-winning and highly praised, the four musicians are amongst the stars of the young string quartet generation.
